Spectrum Unlimited, Inc. has been involved in publishing medical journals for minority premed students, medical students, residents, new physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals for over 20 years.

We are dedicated to producing publications to inform minorities of the most current information available in the healthcare industry.  Our readers assure us that we have reached this goal.

Spectrum Unlimited Mission Statement
To bring information, guidance, and inspiration to the nation's minority medical and premed students, as well as enhance the ability of the nation's medical schools' faculty, staff, and administrators to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in medicine.

In 1989, the Journal of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) was the group's official publication. That journal grew from a small publication into one of the most influential media of its type. Four years later, we changed the name of our publication to the Journal for Minority Medical Students to refocus the Journal to all segments of the minority medical student community: African American, Asian Pacific Islander, American Indian, and Hispanic. We are not associated in any way with SNMA.

In 1992, we introduced the Keepsake: A Guide for Minority Science Students. This special resource was commissioned under the auspices of the Health and Human Services Administration.

It is designed to encourage minority science students to continue their pursuit of a career in the many related healthcare fields. The Keepsake, which is now an annual publication, is currently the most comprehensive source of information for minority science students.

In the summer of 1993, we introduced the Nursing and Allied Health Journal for Minorities. This latest breakthrough was possible through the cooperation of the National Black Nurses' Association. That journal is now titled:An Urban Approach to Nursing and Allied Health.

Spectrum's highly professional staff is supported by the latest equipment in desktop publishing and data management. We are able to create, design, test, redesign, and produce camera-ready editorial and artwork within the facilities at Spectrum.  This in-house capability keeps costs down and allows Spectrum to be very competitive in its advertising and publishing rates. Our staff is made up of professionals with strong backgrounds in all phases of the publishing process.  Bill Bowers, the publisher, was formerly the president of the Black Collegian Magazine and publisher of the Journal of the National Society of Black Engineers. Our editor, Laura Scholes, was formerly managing editor for Lighting Dimensions, assistant to the managing editor for Metropolitan Home, and editorial assistant for Vogue . Both hold formal degrees in their fields.

Erica Perkins who holds an MBA in marketing heads up our Marketing Department. Dr. Kandie S. Tate, a 2007 Meharry Medical College graduate, coordinates our unique Campus Rep Program. Our Business Manager, Ninas Jenkins has worked at several prominent corporations in the New Orleans area. Our successful staff also includes Louis Pardo, a senior Account Executive who in part developed our Charter Advertisers' programs so that we now have some of the most prestigious agencies, universities and hospitals in the U.S. Michell Perkins, M.D. works along side the publisher consulting and advising in editorial content and overall direction of publication.
